Giuseppe Peano (1858–1932) was an Italian mathematician and logician, who is especially notable for his work on set theory. He was one of the founders of the philosophy of mathematics known as Peano arithmetic. He was the first person to publish a proof of the axiom of choice. Peano's most important contribution to mathematics is probably his definition of a class: a subset whose members can be ordered by a relation (the "order relation", or order on the members). According to this definition, sets and classes are two different ways to define the same class. He also developed the theory of transfinite numbers, which is an important tool used in set theory and analysis.
